#22 - ebooks

Had a tough time trying to log on to Introduction to Netlibrary, but was able to load it finally last night. Reading the ebooks on Netlibrary might appeal to our younger generation but I pefer the printed version as it is not so stressful on the eyes.Using the computer for long period of time may cause eye strain and vision problems. Using the Netlibrary, ebooks can be downloaded onto disks or portable devices to be read at leisure. However, these ebooks have an expiry date and can be renewed just like a library book. In the case of ebooks on the Project Gutenburg these ebooks belong to the person who has downloaded it.

The wireless electronic book reader Kindle produced by Amazon looks good but I still prefer the written word.

#21 (Week 9) - Podcasts

Have had a look at podcast and am interested in learning Mandarin. Located one and included it in my bloglines

Will be checking this podcast to help me learn. The website is SBS Radio - Mandarin.

#20 (Week 9) - YouTube

Have used YouTube before to look at videos of Teresa Teng. She was a famous singer born in Taiwan. Unfortunately she died at 42,in Thailand as a result of an asthma attack. Found lots of her songs and some of them in Malay and Hokkien with lyrics. I like to look at this website from time to time and reminisce.

Today while looking found videos teaching us how to draw manga comics, teenagers could look at these videos and learn from them instead of from the books. Have a look at the video as attached

This could be useful on library websites as teenagers can check them out instead of taking out the books.

#19 - Discovering Web2.0 tools

I had a look at Imcooked website, video recipe sharing. Had difficulty in loading the videos, took a long time and then it didn't play.

Had a look at ifoods.tv but also had trouble loading. Need faster internet connection to look at these websites.

Decided to have a look at a website instead. Browsed Revolution Health , winner of the Health category and found it quite interesting. Will be bookmarking it so that I have a more detailed look later on.

# 18 Google Documents

I have included a Powerpoint presentation of the Manukau Libraries for everyone to check out.

Example of document which I prepared earlier can be found at google documents

I have also downloaded a Powerpoint presentation but this has failed to load, maybe I'll have to redo it. However it takes quite a long time to upload.

Had a look at Zoho Writer and it basically works the same as google docs.

#16 (Week 6) Library 2.0 and Web 2.0

During my visit to Adelaide noticed that they had a blog on their website as it was advertised and displayed very prominantly and beautifully in the library. When checking the Adelaide library website, it was set up very nicely and very informative. Check out the blog ie Charlotte's blog. Also has a profile on Facebook where users can search the catalog without leaving Facebook, but this part does not seem to be working well, maybe some refinements to be done to remedy the problems. This seems to be a good example of using Web 2.0 in Library 2.0
The website also has information about the Library Elf on the frontpage.
